East Central freshman Josie Trabel scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the first quarter as the Lady Trojans built a 20-10 lead after one quarter, 34-18 lead at the half and 46-26 lead after three quarters en route to the 56-34 victory over Rushville on Saturday.
The Lady Lions are 10-9 on the season and 2-3 in the EIAC. East Central is 14-5 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
East Central went right to Trabel to start the game as she tallied the first four points of the contest. Annika Marlow hit a 3-pointer to get the Lady Lions on the board. East Central’s Kayla Maxwell answered with a bomb on the other end. After two Olivia Yager free throws for Rushville, Trabel scored five straight. After another Marlow 3-pointer, East Central scored the next eight points. Two Tori Campbell free throws closed the first eight minutes with East Central on top 20-10.
Marlow’s steal and bucket opened the second quarter, but East Central went on a 12-3 run to lead 32-15. Rushville got a 3-pointer by Briley Munchel and East Central got two free throws from Emma Ertel as the half closed with East Central leading 34-18.
East Central did not slow down in the third quarter. The Lady Trojans opened the second half on an 11-2 run to push the lead to 45-20. A bucket by Kourtney Ash started a 6-0 Rushville run before a free throw by Maxwell gave East Central a 46-26 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Neither team made a run in the fourth. Six of Rushville’s points came at the charity stripe. Isabella Runnebohm’s bucket late in the game closed the scoring with East Central posting the 22-point victory.
Yager led the Lady Lions with nine points and three rebounds. Marlow added eight points. Runnebohm and Campbell both had four points. Munchel and Turner (four rebounds) added three points each. Ash had two points and two rebounds and Buckley finished with one point.
East Central was led by Trabel with 25 points. Brilan McCory had seven and Maxwell added six.
In the junior varsity contest, East Central outscored the Lady Lions 11-7 in the third quarter and held off Rushville for the 41-39 victory.
Josie Fields and Emily Hadley both had 10 points to lead Rushville. Ashley Todd added nine followed by Belle Gossett seven, Cassidy Tellas two and Lexi Morris one.
The Lady Lions travel to Shelbyville (3-14) today with a 6 p.m. junior varsity tip.
