CONNERSVILLE – In the third match of the season between Connersville and Rushville, this one was for a sectional championship. The host Spartans defeated the Lions 4-1 for the title and a trip to the regional.
The Lions finish a strong season at 13-7.
“We can look at the results today and point to being competitive in four out of five matches, but that is little consolation for not performing well enough to come out on top. We have had a pretty good year overall with a win in our invitational and finishing a respectable 13-7 on the year,” Coach Heuer said.
“A couple of our guys posted phenomenal records individually. At No. 2 singles Marlin Hershberger finished at 19- 4 and Sam Smith at No. 3 singles finished at 19-2. We’ll shake off this disappointment and put it behind us and look to redeem ourselves next year,” Coach Heuer added.
Smith landed Rushville’s lone point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gage Brown at No. 3 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Jake Carroll fell 6-3, 6-4 to Gavin Parsley.
At No. 2 singles, Marlin Hershberger lost 6-2, 6-3 to Jonah Graham.
In doubles, the No. 1 doubles team of Braiden Hunter and Cameron Jackman lost 6-4, 7-5 to Sebastion Burch and Seth Spurlock.
At No. 2 doubles, Bryce Berkemeier and Alex Wainwright lost 6-1, 6-1 to Dylan Bennington and Dustin McCarrell.
Rushville 5, Union County 0
The Lions opened the sectional against Union County on Thursday and defeated the Patriots 5-0 to move to 13-6 on the season.
“We got by Union County in good fashion and in so doing, we earned that opportunity on Saturday that we’ve counted on all year. Our guys are going into the sectional final in a good state of mind about our prospects for success. It’s been our goal all year to get here and we are focused on what we have to do to nail down the big one on Saturday,” Coach Heuer said.
At No. 1 singles, Jake Carroll defeated Zeb Hall 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Marlin Hershberger defeated Grady Swafford 6-0, 6-1.
Sam Smith took a forfeit at No. 3 singles.
At No. 1 doubles, Braiden Hunter and Cameron Jackman defeated Brady Graham and Brennan Graham 6-4, 6-0.
