On opening night for the Lady Lions, Rushville outscored visiting New Castle 36-12 in the middle quarters en route to the 68-37 win. Rushville is 1-0 on the young season and New Castle is 0-2.
New Castle opened the game from long range as Cloie York hit from beyond the 3-point arc. A free throw by Tori Campbell and 3-pointer from Annika Marlow put the Lady Lions in front 4-3. Later in the quarter, a bucket by Isabella Runnebohm gave the Lady Lions a 10-7 lead. New Castle scored the next five points, three from York and two from Anyssa Hall off a rebound. Two Olivia Yager free throws at the 1:44 mark tied the game at 12-12. Rushville added free throws from Campbell, Abby Buckley and Maddi Turner to lead 16-12 after one quarter.
The Lady Lions continued the offensive run to start the second quarter with an 8-0 run. Kourtney Ash connected on back-to-back buckets followed by four straight from Turner as Rushville led 24-12. Karsen Morgan got the Lady Trojans on the board in the second quarter with a pair of free throws. Rushville capped the first half with a 7-4 run and took a 31-18 lead to the break at the half.
The Lady Lions took command of the game to open the second half with an 11-0 run. Marlow’s bucket started the run and her lay-up off the Briley Munchel assist capped the run with Rushville leading 42-18.
A 3-pointer by New Castle’s Morgan ended the drought for the Lady Trojans. Campbell answered with a triple on the other end. Runnebohm followed with four straight points. After a 3-pointer by New Castle’s Maddy Meek, an Ash free throw ended the quarter with the Lady Lions in control 52-24.
There would be no comeback for New Castle as Rushville outscored the Lady Trojans 16-13 over the final eight minutes. Lexi Morris had five of her seven points in the frame.
For the Lady Lions, Campbell finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Yager added 11 points. Marlow had 10 points and five assists. Morris and Ash (four rebounds) both had seven points. Runnebohm had six points. Buckley and Turner (four rebounds) both had five points. Munchel and Hadley both had two points.
York was the lone Lady Trojan in double figures with 10 points.
Rushville cruised to a 50-14 victory in the junior varsity game.
The Lady Lions were led by Belle Gossett with 12 points followed by Hadley nine, Morris eight, Cassidy Tellas four, Cyndi Tush four, Haley Rode four, Josie Fields four, Molly Zachery three and Olivia Wehr two.
Rushville hosts EIAC foe South Dearborn on Saturday.
