After nearly 40 minutes of action, the Lions needed one big defensive possession to secure a victory at New Castle Saturday. As the Lions left the huddle from a time-out, RCHS head coach Brian Bowen encouraged his players by clapping and saying, “We have to defend for two point six (:02.6)...come on.” The Lions responded by forcing a tough fade-away shot by New Castle's Steven Bennett, which was no good and the Lions held on for the 53-51 overtime victory over the Trojans. Rushville improves to 12-2 on the year while the Trojans fall to 11-3. New Castle's Jordan Hahn opened the scoring in game. Rushville came right back with a Spencer Comer bucket in the lane. These two led their teams in scoring on the night as Hahn finished with 19 and Comer had a game-high 22. A Nolan Laird steal setup the Lions' next possession as Brandon Herbert scored in close. New Castle's Bennett found the range from behind the arc, but a rebound bucket by Thompson had Rushville back in front. New Castle closed the first quarter on a 5-2 spurt to lead 10-8. Hahn's triple got things going in the second quarter. Rushville then shut down the Trojans and went on an 8-0 run. Two free throws from Thompson started the run. After a Comer free throw and a scramble for a loose ball finally run down by Laird, Comer hit a 3-pointer to give the Lions the lead. Herbert's rebound bucket had the Lions on top 16-13. New Castle closed the half strong, scoring seven straight points. After Hahn's bucket in the paint, Trey Ball stole the ball and finished on the other end with a dunk. Bennett capped the run and the first half with a 3-pointer as the Trojans led 20-16 at the break. For a third straight quarter, Hahn opened the scoring. Rushville again put together a run as the Lions ran off seven straight points. The Lions tied the game at 22-22 as Joas Knepp came up with a steal and Laird found Herbert for the bucket. A Herbert free throw gave the Lions a one-point advantage. The Rushville lead grew three as Laird again found Herbert for the easy bucket, but nine straight points by New Castle, capped by Caleb Jackson's 3-pointer and Jordan Richardson's two free throws, had the Trojans on top 33-27 with 1:14 to play in the third. Just before the third quarter horn, Thompson scored to cut the deficit to 35-31 heading to the fourth. Thompson's 15-foot jumper started the fourth and after a bucket by Ball, Comer and Thompson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Lions a 39-37 lead with 4:24 left in the game. Rushville held the lead until four straight free throws by Hahn had New Castle on top 43-40. Comer's drive cut the deficit to one. Richardson added a free throw on the other end, but a Laird assist to Herbert had the game tied at 44-44 with :19.8 to go. On New Castle's last possession of regulation, Hahn drove the lane, but Herbert's block sent the game to overtime. A drive b y Richardson gave the Trojans a 46-44 lead in the extra session. Knepp then found Herbert with the assist and Comer connected on two from the charity stripe as the Lions regained the lead 48-46. Hahn's 3-pointer put the Trojans back in front, but it was short-lived as Comer answered with a 3-pointer to put the Lions up 51-49. After a New Castle turnover, Laird drained two free throws with :28.1 on the clock and the Lions led by four. Richardson drove the lane to cut the deficit to two. The Lions missed the front end of a one-and-one to give New Castle a chance. Hahn looked to give the Trojans the win with a 3-pointer, but it was no good. The ball went out of bounds of the Lions, setting up the final defensive stand by Rushville with :02.6 and the eventual victory by the Lions. Following Comer's 22 for the Lions was Herbert with 16 and Thompson with 13. Richardson was also in double figures for New Castle with 13. In the junior varsity game, the Lions led 22-18 at the half, but an 11-6 run in the third quarter by New Castle helped the Trojans rally for the 45-39 victory. New Castle was led by Bryant McIntosh with 18 points. The Lions got 10 points from Brandon Plough, nine from Nate Hoeing, six from Will Sickbert, four from Joe Daubenspeck and John Riddell and two from Monte Sitton, Hunter Orme and Cameron Cox.
