The BRMS football teams squared off against Doe Creek Wednesday and earned a split on the night.

The eighth-grade Cubs posted a 24-14 victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.

“I want to thank as many fans as we had tonight, (the) student section was great and the cheerleaders did a great job getting them going. It was exciting for the players to see that many fans in the stands. Next week I want to fill the stands up,” BRMS coach Jason Yurack said.

The Cubs got a big game out of their offensive line—Corbin Huffer, Alex Leisure, Cody Lightner, Seth Newhouse, George Wilson, Kriegh Springman, Can MacQuinley, Brandon Myer and Jonathen Thompson.

“Physically, upfront we controlled the ball on offense. We've been working on firing off the ball all week and their improvement showed tonight,” Coach Yurack added. “When my lineman execute like they did tonight, without errors or penalties, we are hard to stop. Our loss last week against Shelbyville left a bad taste in our mouths. We knew we had that game won, and after watching film this week of that game we saw we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers one too many times.”

The first score for the Cubs came on a pass from Spencer Comer to Jonathan Thompson for 70 yards.

Comer also rushed 14 times for 114 yard and added a rushing touchdown and a pair of 2-point conversions.

Matt Ketchum, Stephen Davis and Dustin Gilbert also had good games as Ketchum rushed eight times for 75 yards and a 2-point conversion; Davis rushed five times for 54 yards and a touchdown and Gilbert rushed three times for 14 yards.

“These backs are explosive and exciting to watch,” Coach Yurack noted.

The Cubs’ defense held their own.

“Coach Hittle does a good job understanding his players and running his defense to his strengths and I have full confidence in his preparation for next week,” Coach Yurack said.

Defensively, Shane Yager sealed the win with a fourth quarter interception. He also had four tackles on the night. George Wilson finished with six tackles. Others with tackles included Comer with nine, Hittle with four, Thompson with five, Cain with four, Meyer with four and a sack, Springman with four, Davis with two, Ryan O’Dell with three, Gilbert with two, Newhouse with three and Ketchum with three.

In the seventh-grade contest, the Cubs had a chance at the end, but fell short with a late interception as Doe Creek held on 28-20.

Caleb Brown had two touchdowns and 167 yards rushing for the Cubs. Carl Judd added an 88-yard touchdown reception. Lance Whittaker had an extra point and connected with Judd on the TD pass.

Defensively, Jalen Smith and Zach Miller had a fumble recovery each. Monte Sitton had an interception. Brown tallied seven tackles. Whittaker finished with six tackles. Matt St. John chipped in with five tackles. Keith Miers had four tackles. Sitton and Bo Hammond both had three tackles. Bradley, Caleb Lambert and Zach Miller all had two tackles each.
