The Board of Directors for the Rush County United Fund (RUF) recently accepted the resignation of Mary Ann Beard, who has been the executive director since 2016.

Since assuming the position, the amount of monies raised for the RUF has increased. This allowed the RUF to give more money to the nine agencies approved for funding.

Mary Ann developed several new fundraisers including the Father/Daughter Dance which is held every September. It has been so successful that a second night was added to accommodate the number of people who want to attend.

Other fundraisers include monies received each quarter from Dairy Queen, Hardee’s and Staggs. These businesses give RUF a portion of the proceeds collected from 4 to 8 p.m. on certain nights.

In addition, many agencies, business and individuals donate money each year to increase funding to new agencies as well as agencies donated to in the past.

She will be greatly missed, especially given her name recognition as the Auditor for Rush County for many years. Many people in the community knew Mrs. Beard and were willing to assist in fundraising for RUF.

Loraine Edwards, who has been executive secretary for the RUF for the past 16 years, retired on June 25. She has seen many executive directors and board members come and go.

She has been important in assisting new executive directors in acclimating to their position. She will be sorely missed.

At the May 2019 board meeting, Dr. Dennis Bowman was elected as new executive director. Dr. Bowman joined the board in November of 2018.

Dr. Bowman stated Mrs. Beard would be a tough act to follow. His desire is to build on the programs and ideas Mrs. Beard has implemented during her tenure.

Dr. Bowman is a retired psychologist and a former minister of the Family Worship Center in Rushville. He has worked as a speech pathologist, special education teacher, school psychologist and administrator.

At 40 years of age, he returned to school and finished his doctorate. He has taught at IUPUI and Butler in the areas of psychology and child development.

He retired in 2001. He presently does speech therapy at various nursing homes including Miller’s Merry Manor.

He moved to Rushville in 1998 and liked the town so much he continued to live in Rushville. Dr. Bowman is looking forward to working with the board of directors and people in Rushville to increase funding and agencies served.

Dr. Bowman would like to thank Loraine Edwards and Mary Ann Beard for assisting him in acclimating to this new position. They both will be sorely missed.
