Jake McKee Heart of Gold Fund benefit approaches

The fourth and final Jake’s Bad Boy BBQ and Ride will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Rushville Eagles.

Registration starts at 10 a.m. with the ride starting at noon. Motorcycle riders and Jeep owners are welcome to participate in the event at a cost of $20 per rider and $5 per passenger.

A meal (included in registration cost) and silent auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bever Homestead and Barn located at 7474 W. County Road 500 S. in Glenwood.

Net proceeds will benefit the Jake McKee Heart of Gold Fund through the Rush Memorial Hospital (RMH) Foundation.

The fund was established by the McKee family in 2016 after the sudden passing of Jacob (Jake) Thomas McKee from heart related complications. Jake was the son of Niki and John Mckee.

According to Jake’s mom Niki, “Whether your child is four, 14 or 24 no parent should have to face the most horrific kind of pain – that of losing a child. If one life can be saved through the screenings provided by Jake’s Heart of Gold Fund, then we have accomplished what we set out to do.”

The McKee family established the fund to turn tragedy into something meaningful. The fund provides pediatric echocardiogram screenings free of charge to children in grades 6-12.

The first screenings were held at RMH in November of 2016. Support for the fund has allowed 291 children to receive screenings through a partnership with RMH and St. Vincent Hospital.

During the most recent screening, three of 25 individuals had abnormal results. There is never a charge associated with screenings as the Heart of Gold Fund covers the cost.
