Investigation into police impersonation

The Rush County Sheriff’s Department is currently conducting an investigation about a report of police impersonation.

It was reported in the early morning hours on June 06, 2019 that a female was stopped in the area of County Road 600 East and State Road 44 by a dark colored car displaying a red light. A male subject made contact with this female informing her of the reason for the stop and that he needed her to exit her vehicle. The female stated that the male was not in a uniform and thought the male’s vehicle was not a marked police vehicle and asked to see identification. It was reported that the male showed her some sort of badge on his belt, but it appeared fake. The female did not exit her vehicle and the male attempted to order the female out of the car. The female drove off at that time.

Citizens should be aware that for an Indiana law enforcement officer to conduct a traffic stop for an infraction that officer must be wearing a complete and proper uniform or must be in a complete and proper marked police vehicle.

The Rush County Sheriff’s Department ask that should you find yourself in an incident like this to immediately dial 911.
