Julia Holland, RCHS and visual arts student of Mrs. Toni Schultz, is the recognized recipient of “Art. Write. Now.” Scholastic Art and Writing Contest of the Central Indiana Region.
Julia, a senior, received honors with two Silver Key Awards and an Honorable Mention. Her artworks cover a range of media and techniques.
Julia created two strikingly different self-portraits. Head Above Water is a small, intimate colored pencil illustration that began with a photograph that she took of herself underwater. The cool, passive color scheme of the drawing is further enhanced by the abstraction of her features by the rippling water.
In contrast, Echo is a rather large oil painting measuring 24” x 30” that displays a highly cropped composition of her face staring through simplified leaves and miscellaneous foliage.
She was awarded Honorable Mention for Octopus, a small oil on canvas. This painting is packed with minute details, highly contrasting complementary colors of blue and orange, and a plethora of textures.
Julia’s recognition and awards are quite an accolade as she competed against nearly 3,500 high school artists and writers from 54 counties in Indiana. All Gold Key recipients’ artworks will be on display at Clowes Hall during February and March.
Julia will be honored and recognized on Sunday, March 22, at Clowes Hall, Butler University at the region’s Scholastics Art and Writing Awards Ceremony. Having received these awards, Julia will join the ranks of other celebrated American artists and writers that have received Scholastic recognition, such as Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, and Truman Capote.
