JULY

FRIDAY (7/19)

• Free concert, 7 p.m., will be held at Rushville’s Riverside Park Amphitheater, 100 West Water Street Rushville, IN 46173. Rushville Riverside Park free summer concert series line up July 19: KIST (KISS tribute band). Opening band Zeke and the Geeks.

SATURDAY (7/20)

• KART racking all day Saturday and Sunday at the RCHS campus and Rush County Fairgrounds. See story in today's edition for details.

• Knights of Columbus Chicken Fry from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults $10 and children $6. Carryouts available. Menu includes: Chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, rolls, applesauce and cake. All white meat $1 extra. Open to the public. Information: 932-2277.

• The Carthage Home Ec group, Homemaker's on the Go, will have a Yard and Bake Sale during Carthage Community Days at the Carthage Henry Henley Library. The sale will begin at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to the Library.

• The Rush County Historical Society annual Children’s Day at the Gowdy House Museum, located at 619 North Perkins Street, Rushville. The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., rain or shine.

• The Boys and Girls Club of Rush County will be closed Saturday, July 20, through Sunday, July 28, for our annual cleaning. The club will reopen on Monday, July 29.

SUNDAY (7/21)

• The Scott Brooks Memorial Elks vs. Cancer Golf Tournament, 8 a.m., Antler Pointe Golf Club. Registration begins at 7 a.m. All proceeds go to the Elks Cancer Fund to benefit IUPUI Cancer Research Centers. Scramble format with teams of 4. Registration fees $55 per golfer. Awards, door prizes, a 50/50 Raffle, and a free lunch. Entry forms at the Elks Lodge, Antler Point Golf Club, or Horseshoe Bend Golf Course. RSVP by July 19 by calling the Elks Lodge at 765-938-1307. Any business interested in purchasing a hole sponsorship for $25, wishing to make a donation of a door prize, or entering a team may also call the Elks Lodge.

• Lora Brook Hatfield Day at Stagg's Restaurant and Dairy Treats will be Sunday, July 21. A portion of the sales from that day will go to the Lora Brook Hatfield Memorial Scholarship at the Rush County Community Foundation. Donations will also be accept. This fund provides scholarships to RCHS and Knightstown Community High School graduating seniors. Please come and join Lora's family and friends and enjoy a great meal and wonderful ice cream treats.

MONDAY (7/22)

• INDOT will close SR 244 in southwestern Rush County between C.R. 725 West and C.R. 750W, six miles east of Interstate 74, on Monday morning. This closure will continue for 50 days while INDOT's contractor removes and replaces a drainage structure over Mill Creek. The state's official detour routes through-traffic via I-74 and S.R. 3 around the construction area.

WEDNESDAY (7/24)

• All the Rush County Schools elementaries (including Kindergarten) will have registration from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 24; from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25; and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, July 26.

• Manilla Town & Country Homemakers Club will meet at the home of Marilyn White at 7 p.m. Sharon Wooley will serve as co-hostess. Roll call: Did you go to the fair?

• Noble Niters meet at 5:45 p.m. at New Salem Lion's Club followed by Panzarottis at Shelbyville. Roll call response: What did you do on July 4? We will be filling out books. Please bring any cookies, pies or brownies you are donating to the Mana Mission to the meeting.

• Manilla Lions Club is hosting a Pork Chop Benefit Dinner for Bud Schutt from 5 to 7 p.m. at their community building located on State Road 44 on the west side of Manilla. Dinner $8.00. Carry-outs available. All profit going for Bud's medical expenses.

SATURDAY (7/27)

• Rush County Heritage invites one and all for a good old-fashioned picnic to be held at noon at the Offutt Bridge. The group wants to highlight the work they do with a celebration held at a covered bridge they successfully worked to save. The Offutt Bridge is northwest of Arlington on Offutt Bridge Road (formerly 475 W) just north of 300 N. Cars coming from Rushville might want to go north on SR 3, turn left on CR 300 N and continue for a few miles. The road to the bridge will be marked with a sign and balloons. Parking will be available at the site of the picnic. Heritage is furnishing hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and table service. Guests need to bring a covered dish for the pitch-in meal and lawn chairs. The people cooking the burgers and dogs would appreciate knowing how many are coming, so please let Eleanor Arnold at 932-5204 know your plans.

• Hope Spot's Second Annual Back to School Day, 8 to 11 a.m., St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 426 N. Morgan St. We are offering backpacks with school supplies for our children going back to school. If you need help with providing these essential items for your children come and receive the items that your child(ren) will need.

• The RCHS Class of 2003 will be having its 10 year class reunion on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Rushville Elks Lodge. The reunion will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 prior to the reunion and $20 at the door. Contact Phillip Morgan at rushvilleclassof2003@gmail.com.

• Registration for Rushville Consolidated High School will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, from 8 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, and from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 1.

• The Manna Mission will be having a cook-out from 5 to 7 p.m. at Main Street Christian Church. Eat-in and Carry-outs are available. If you have any relatives or members of your churches that cannot attend the free meal, please feel free to get your loved ones a meal and take it to their homes.

WEDNESDAY (7/31)

• All Rush County Schools kindergartens will have Open House at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 31.

• Registration for Benjamin Rush Middle School will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31 and 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 1.

• Orientation will be at 5:30 p.m. for seventh-grade students and new students to BRMS.

• Registration for Rushville Consolidated High School will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, from 8 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, and from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 1.

• RCHS Roaring Mentors will meet with incoming Freshman on Wednesday, July 31. They’ll start at 5:00 p.m. in the RCHS Cafeteria with general information and meet their students. Next they’ll share dinner (5:30 p.m.) and then move into classroom navigation and locker location. Parents will join their Freshman at 7:00 p.m. in Laughlin Center for a variety of information to help all have a successful start to the school year.

• Come meet Christy Tollett, Purdue University Student Services Coordinator, at the Rushville Public Library on July 31, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Learn about Purdue University classes, certificates and degrees in Richmond. Local Purdue degrees include Computer Graphics, Engineering Technology (Interdisciplinary and Mechanical), Industrial Technology, and Organizational Leadership. General education classes toward these degrees are available at the Danielson Center. There is still time to enroll for Fall 2013.

• Registration for Rushville Consolidated High School will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, from 8 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, and from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 1.

• The 65th annual Indiana Pioneer Engineers Club Steam Engine Show and Reunion is Aug. 1-4 at Caldwell Pioneer Acres, 3707 South CR 200W. The show grounds are easily accessible from Rushville on SR 3 south to CR 350S, east to CR 200W and south a short distance. Various activities will be held throughout the weekend including the daily parade of engines, a variety of games, booths, contests, a large flea market area, the Knights of Columbus kitchen and more. The public is invited to attend this working museum. Entries and participants from throughout the Midwest and all over the country will be in attendance and the $5 wristband is good for the duration of the four day event.

FRIDAY (8/2)

• Manilla Fish Fry 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, Breakfast 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 and Fish Fry again 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. Fish Fry is $8 meal with kid's meals available. • Third Annual 5K Run/Walk in Carthage supports the Blue River Community Harvest and includes a 5K bicycle ride.

• Annual Pork Chop Dinner, Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department, 4-7 p.m., smoked pork chop, green beans, corn on the cob, baked potatoes, bread and butter, tomatoes, chips, applesauce, drink and dessert. $8 per person. $3 hot dog meal. Carry-outs available.

• The Cellular Connection, in a joint effort with its customers, will be donating 60,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway initiative.Local families can bring their children to the store between noon and 2 p.m. Aug. 3 to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more. The participating store in Rushville is located at 1814 N. Main St. Each store will donate between 100 and 150 backpacks. Leftover backpacks will be donated to local schools.

• In cooperation with the Rush County Food Pantry (RCCA), the Gleaners Mobile Food Bank will be bringing a truck load of food to the Main Street Christian Church parking lot, 615 N. Main St., Rushville, on the first Monday of each month for distribution to local residents. The distribution will be made between 4 and 6 p.m. Residents will need to bring their own containers (sacks or boxes) to put their food into.

TUESDAY (8/6)

• Only Rush County Schools Kindergarten students will attend school Tuesday, Aug. 6.

• Open House at Arlington Elementary for grades 1 to 6 is from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6.

• Open House at RES East and West for grades 1 to 6 is from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6.

• The first Tuesday of every month a free health check is available at Miller’s Merry Manor, 2 to 3 p.m. Blood Pressure, blood sugar and weight checks. Refreshments will be available.

WEDNESDAY (8/7)

• Rush County Schools students grades 1 to 12 will begin school Wednesday, Aug. 7.

• Columbus Star Quilters' Guild special meeting on Aug. 7. The meeting will be an auction of the items from the generous sewing stash donation made by Carol Duncan. It will be held at the Masonic Lodge at 4131 Rocky Ford Road, the corner of Taylor and Rocky Ford Roads. All interested persons are welcome to attend. There is no charge to attend. Doors open at 8:45 a.m. and the auction starts at 9:30 a.m.
