Lady Lions drop opener at Yorktown

RUSHVILLE — The Lady Lion softball team opened the season on the road at HHC foe Yorktown. The Lady Tigers took advantage of five Lady Lion errors to score nine unearned runs in the 11-1 victory.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning.

Rushville got on the board in the top of the third when Shelby Woods blasted a solo home run over the center field fence to lead off the inning. That was all for the Lady Lions in the frame.

Yorktown responded with two runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to lead 8-1 heading to the fifth inning.

Rushville’s Riley Lanham opened the top of the fifth with a line-drive single to right. Two ground balls and a strikeout ended the inning for the

Lady Lions.

Yorktown closed out the win in the bottom of the fifth as a two-out error opened the flood gates and the Lady Tigers’ next three batters scored to secure the 11-1 win.

Taylor Hoeing went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions, allowing just two earned runs nine hits and six strikeouts. Yorktown’s Lumpkin gave up just two hits while striking out six.
