Lady Lions finish regular season with win

RUSHVILLE — NEW CASTLE – The Lady Lions rounded out the regular season with a 54-36 victory at New Castle. The Lady Lions finished the regular season and enter sectional play Tuesday with a 17-3 record. New Castle finished the regular season at 6-14.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first eight minutes. Senior guard Mikayla Dougherty liked the surroundings for shooting as she connected on two 3-pointers in the first quarter. Mackenzie Campbell and Keragan Niehoff both had six points in the quarter.

Dougherty continued with the hot hand in the second quarter as she drained another pair from behind the arc. Makayla Herbert also found the range from distance as the Lady Lions led 30-23 at the half. New Castle got 10 points from Alderson in the half to pace the Lady Trojans.

The Lady Lions put the game out of reach in the third quarter – outscoring the Lady Trojans 20-8. Dougherty and Herbert both hit from long range. Campbell added five points, including a traditional three-point play to end the scoring in the third for the Lady Lions. Niehoff and Kelsi Ash both had two buckets for the Lady Lions as Rushville headed to the fourth with a 50-31 lead.

The Lady Lions only managed four points in the final stanza, but the Lady Trojans weren’t much better with just five.

Dougherty led the Lady Lions with 16 points. Campbell finished with 13 and Niehoff had 11. Herbert and Ash both had six points. Casey Yager added two. Alderson and Woollard led New Castle with 12 points each.

The junior varsity Lady Lions closed out the season with a 39-34 overtime win to end at 15-5 on the year. Rushville trailed by 11 points at the half (21-10), but outscored the Lady Trojans 24-13 in the second half to force overtime. In the extra session, the Lady Lions scored five points and held the Lady Trojans scoreless for the win.

Taylor Yager led the Lady Lions with 10 points followed by Ellie Sammons eight, Brooke Niehoff eight, McKenzie Woolston five, Kylie Martindale four, Tayler Koors two and Tori Colestock two.

Rushville hosts Batesville at 7 p.m. today to start the IHSAA sectional.
