Trojans hold off Lions’ late rally

RUSHVILLE — NEW CASTLE – The host Trojans built a 15-point fourth quarter lead, before a barrage of bombs from Mitch Laird got the Lions within six with less than two minutes to play. New Castle’s Korey Ryan iced the Trojan win by hitting 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the 62-53 victory.

The win improves the Trojans to 10-5 while the Lions fall to 7-7.

Late in the second quarter is where the game went in the Trojans favor. A bucket by Nate Niehoff cut the New Castle lead to 27-25 with less than two minutes to play in the half. New Castle scored the next six points to lead 33-25 at the half.

Hunter Orme scored to start the third quarter. New Castle got a free throw from Kyle Goolsby and drive to bucket by Ryan before a reverse lay-up by

Nate Hoeing cut the deficit back to seven. A Niehoff free throw had the deficit at six with 4:29 to play in the third. Rushville then went three minutes without scoring as the Trojans extended the lead to 47-32. Laird’s bucket closed the quarter with Rushville trailing 47-34 after three quarters.

A rebound bucket by Steven Bennett had the lead at 15 as the final quarter started. The lead was still there when Bennett scored again. Rushville head coach Brian Bowen called time-out with 5:29 to play. Laird followed with a 3-pointer. Rushville a pair of chances in the paint, but New Castle could not take advantage and add to the lead. Another Rushville time-out with 2:12 preceded back-to-back triples from Laird to cut the deficit to 55-49 with 1:37 to play.

Ryan hit four free throws around two Orme buckets to keep the deficit at six points. Ryan then put the game away at the line as the Trojans held on 62-53.

Ryan led all scorers with 24 points, including 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. Bennett finished with 18 and Goolsby had 11 for the Trojans. Rushville was led by Laird with 16 followed by Hoeing 10 and Orme 10.

In the junior varsity game, the Lions (9-5) outscored the Trojans 14-2 in the fourth quarter to rally for the 37-27 victory. Brad Busald led the Lions with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Ricky Thompson had 11 points. Bryce Dye scored 10 points. Cris Combs had four points and five assists. Jeremy Hallgarth added two points.
