---- — RICHMOND – With less than seven minutes to play in a 2-2 contest at the Richmond soccer sectional, Rushville’s Treyton Meal scored his second goal of the game to lift the Lions to a 3-2 victory over Franklin County and to a berth in the sectional title game.

With the win, the Lions will face conference foe Connersville (3-1 winners over New Castle) for the sectional championship at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Lions opened the scoring as Meal scored off the Ricky Thompson assist with just seven minutes gone in the first half.

Franklin County’s Danny Chaille scored on a penalty kick at the 15:19 mark to knot the score at 1-1.

The Lions answered back with a Derrik Justice goal (Grant Houston assist) with 14:24 to play in the half. The Lions took that 2-1 lead to the break.

At the 21:58 mark of the second half, the Wildcats tied the game with a goal by Brett Ortman.

With the game appearing like it would head to an overtime session, Thompson found Meal for the game winner with just over six minutes left in the game. The Lions’ defense made the goal stand up to en sure the victory.

“We played very well in the first half,” Coach Bob Beeler said after the match. “We had a little bit of a lapse defensively in the second half, but we were able to come out of it and get the win. I have to give credit to the defense. Zach Stiers, Trent McQueen, Curtis Wright and Grant Houston did a great job tonight. Zach Keim and Sam Beavers helped on defense as well. They got the ball back to the offense and then Justice , Meal, Thompson, Ethan Foster, Michael Van Schoyck and Luke Sheehan were able to do something with it.”
