In a rematch of the regular season battle between Rushville and Richmond (won by Red Devils 6-1), only one goal was needed to advance out of the sectional semifinal Wednesday at Rushville.
The Red Devils got a goal from Joel Okafor with 3:22 left in the first half. That was all Richmond needed in eliminating the Lions in a tightly contested 80 minutes of action.
“I am really proud of our team,” RCHS Coach Bob Beeler said after the match. “I thought we played really well the entire match, and we had our chances, we just couldn’t get it into the net.”
The Red Devils had 13 shots on goal, all but Okafor’s goal were stopped by Frank Sammons. Rushville had seven shots - five by Hunter Yazel and two by Ethan Foster.
Okafor and Michael Black did the damage for the Red Devils in the regular season meeting, but the defensive effort of Grant Houston and Austin Clark stymied Richmond on Wednesday.
“We manned up on those two players, because they hurt us in the first match,” Beeler said. “Houston and Clark did a great job on them and kept us in the game.”
Also defensively, Curtis Wright and Jon Seals were called into action, and according to Beeler, they both played well.
“Seals and Wright did a tremendous job for us on defense,” Beeler said. “They were pressed into action and answered the call.”
The Lions lose four Seniors following the match - Clark, Piedod Leon, Michael Cain and Daniel Solomon.
“All four of them were solid players and will be sorely missed next year,” Beeler said.
