The Lady Lions open the basketball regular season on the road at Columbus East Friday. The junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m. with the varsity following.
The Lady Olympians have dominated the series in the last 10 meetings between the two programs - winning seven, including last year’s 58-34 win in Memorial Gym.
This looks like a great game for the Lady Lions to take one back in the series. The Lady Olympians went 17-7 last year, but have been crushed with injuries in the offseason. Top scorer and rebounder Allyson Bunch (20.3 ppg and 208 rebounds) along with Katie Ritenour both are out with ACL injuries. Bunch and Ritenour will likely be out until January.
Megan Galle, a starter as a freshman last year for the Lady Olympians, tore a ligament in her wrist and will miss the entire season.
Columbus East returns just one starter in Courtney Hunter, but also return senior Mikala Lomax. Lomax is coming off an ACL injury from last season.
The Lady Lions return a solid nucleus, including leading scorer and second leading rebounder Sarah Cook. The sophomore scored 299 points as a freshman to lead the Lady Lions and grabbed 168 boards. Mackenzie Campbell averaged 13.0 ppg. Keragan Niehoff averaged 7.6 ppg and pulled down a team-high 188 rebounds. Mikayla Dougherty returns at the point and she led the Lady Lions with 60 assists.
This year should be a good one for the Lady Lions. They should improve on the 12-11 record from a year ago and will be the favorite to win the title in Sectional 29. Friday is the start of the journey for the Lady Lions and their fans.
