BRMS volleyball opens with a win

The BRMS seventh-grade volleyball team opened the season with a 25-21, 25-19 victory over Brookville.

Kayleigh Paramore served three aces. Brittany Kuhn and Elizabeth Muir both contributed two aces. Leah Kemple and Hannah Stevens both had one ace.

Colts make cuts

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Three former draft picks were among the 22 players released by the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday.

Offensive lineman Ben Ijalana was a second-round pick in 2011 but missed most of the last two seasons with knee injuries. Defensive tackle Drake Nevis was a third-round pick in 2011 who finished last season on injured reserve. And quarterback Chandler Harnish was the final pick in the 2012 draft.

Linebacker Daniel Adongo, the African rugby player who never made a preseason appearance, and linebacker Josh McNary, who spent the last two years in the Army, also were released.

Others waived included defensive backs Larry Asante, Marshay Green and Sheldon Price; offensive linemen Thomas Austin, Bradley Sowell and Lee Ziemba; defensive linemen Lawrence Guy and Martin Tevaseu; and tight end Dominique Jones.

Azarenka winsin 3 sets

NEW YORK (AP) — Victoria Azarenka needed to win the second set twice. She had plenty left to pull away for a three-set victory at the U.S. Open.

The second-seeded Azarenka took 2 hours, 40 minutes to close out Alize Cornet 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 in the third round Saturday.

Serving on game point at 5-3 in the second, Azarenka pumped her fist and started walking off the court after the 26th-seeded Cornet hit a backhand into the net. The chair umpire had to get her attention to inform her that the line judge had called Azarenka’s previous shot out — replays showed it landed inside the baseline. The umpire overruled the call, but they still had to replay the point.

“Are you freaking kidding me?” Azarenka howled to the chair ump. “What the hell are you doing?”
