Lions drop two to Dragons on Senior Night

RUSHVILLE — The Lions celebrated Senior Night for 10 players – James Brashaber, Brian Busald, Mark Busald, Mike Busald, Kyle Hoeing, Austin Maggard, Austin Niehoff, Hunter Orme, John Riddell and Matthew Wagoner – before face HHC foe New Palestine Friday. The visiting Dragons were able to sweep the doubleheader from the Lions.

In the opener, the Lions fell 8-4. Rushville had 10 hits in the game. The Dragons pounded out 16 hits.

The Dragons led 2-0 in the top of the first after a Nick Ulrey home run and RBI single by Andrew Rester. Rushville came back in the home-half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Maggard singled and Hoeing reached on an error. Brashaber singled in Maggard and Hoeing scored on a Riddell ground ball. Orme’s single to center plated Brashaber.

The Dragons regained the lead with a run in the second and one in the fourth. The Dragons then broke the game open with seven singles and four runs in the top of the fifth.

With two outs in the sixth, Maggard singled and stole second base. Hoeing singled in Maggard to cut the margin to the final score of 8-4.

Mark Busald suffered the loss by pitching 4 2/3 innings with eight earned runs. Hoeing led the offense with three singles, one run scored and one RBI.

In the second game, the Dragons held off the Lions 3-2.

New Palestine scored two runs in the second and one in the third to grab the 3-0 lead.

The Lions broke through in the top of the fourth. Matthew Wagoner singled to lead off the inning. Keith Tressler ran for Wagoner. Riddell reached on an error. Orme’s fly out pushed Tressler to third and Tressler scored as Mark Busald reached on an error. A double steal moved the runners up a base and Mike Busald followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Rushville put the game-evening runs in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but could not push across a run.

Mike Busald went the distance on the hill, allowing two earned runs while scattering eight hits and not allowing a walk to go with eight strike outs. Hoeing had two hits for the Lions.

In earlier action, the Lions defeated North Decatur 13-3.

A lead-off single by Maggard was followed by walks to Hoeing, Brashaber, Niehoff, Riddell and Orme to score three runs.

In the top of the second, Wagoner walked and scored on the Maggard double.

After a walk to Hoeing, a double steal and a fly out, Niehoff doubled in Maggard and Hoeing.

North scored two run on two hits in the bottom of the second.

In the third, Orme doubled and Brian Busald walked. Orme stole third.

After a Brad Busald sacrifice fly, Wagoner and Maggard walked. Hoeing reached on an error and Brashaber had a sacrifice fly to score another Rushville run.

In the fifth, Wagoner singled and stole second. Hoeing reached on an error and Brashaber cleared the bases with a triple to right. Niehoff sacrifice fly scored Brashaber.

Two errors allowed North to score one run in the fifth.

In the sixth, Brian Busald singled to center and Mark Busald singled with both runners moving up a base on an error. Tressler singled to plate the final Rushville run.
