Lions outlast Spartans 9-8

RUSHVILLE — Connersville and Rushville scored a combined 17 runs through four innings. The Lions then shut down the Spartans offense the final three innings to take the 9-8 victory.

The Spartans finished with eight runs on nine hits and two errors. The Lions had nine runs on 10 hits and three errors.

Connersville took the early lead as Adam Smith hit a 2-run home run.

The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the second. Austin Niehoff reached on an error and went to second on the John Riddell sacrifice. Hunter Orme followed with a double. Mark Busald then doubled in both Niehoff and Orme. Brad Busald drew a walk and Mitchell Wagoner singled to load the bases. Austin Maggard’s walk forced in Mark Busald. With two outs, James Brashaber tripled down the right field line to score three more runs. Niehoff singled in Brashaber as the Lions led 7-2.

Connersville came back in the top of the third with a 3-run home run by Drew Huffman.

The Lions added a run in the bottom of the third as Brad Busald had a solo home run.

Connersville tied the game in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Brashaber walked and Niehoff moved him to second with a sacrifice. Riddell then executed the squeeze play to score Brashaber and give the lead back to the Lions.

Mike Busald pitched the fourth and fifth innings for the Lions to get the win. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks. Brashaber pitched the final two innings to get the save, allowing one hit and one walk. Brad Busald started and went three innings with five earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three.

In the reserve contest, Connersville defeated the Lions 18-8.

Chase Hamilton led the Lions offensively by going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Michael St. John had a home run and two RBIs. Keith Tressler hit a 2-run home run. Kyle
