Lions drop season finale to Tigers

RUSHVILLE — YORKTOWN - In the gridiron battle between the host Tigers of Yorktown and the Lions of Rushville, a touchdown was scored in each quarter. Unfortunately, the host squad found pay-dirt in the first three quarter to seal the Hoosier Heritage Conference win 21-7.

The Tigers finish the regular season at 4-5 and the Lions drop to 1-8.

After a pair of punts started the game, the Tigers opened the scoring with just :19.5 to play in the first quarter. A 9-play drive was capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Chandler Carroll.

The Lions were forced to punt on their next possession, but the ball was fumbled by Yorktown and Isaac Sliger recovered for the Lions at the Tiger 31-yard line. Rushville was unable to take advantage and turned the ball over on downs.

Following a Yorktown punt, the Lions moved the ball deep into Tiger territory. Yorktown’s defense came up big by striping the ball from the Lion receiver and giving the ball back to the Tigers on the 17-yard line.

The Lions forced another Tiger punt, but three plays later, Clay Tressler’s pass was picked off by Phillip Perry and returned to the 4-yard line. Yorktown quarterback Riley Neal hit Riley Miller for the touchdown on the next play. The Tigers led 14-0 with just :19.9 on the second quarter clock.

The lead grew to 21-0 as Carroll scored from 26-yards out with 7:38 to go in the third quarter. Carroll finished with 205 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The rest of the Tigers combined for one yard rushing.

The Lions broke the shut out with 6:23 to play in the fourth quarter as Tressler connected with Ashton Wilson on the 32-yard touchdown pass play.

The Lions travel to Indian Creek Friday for the first round of the IHSAA sectional. The Braves finished the regular season at 7-2, capping the season with a 60-6 victory over South Decatur.
