Rushville Republican

Thoughts from the sports desk

It was cool to see all the activity on the youth baseball fields this past weekend. Teams from Rushville and around the area converged on the local fields for the Grant Brower Memorial Tournament. Teams from ages 8U (Rookie) to 12U (Major) competed over the weekend full of baseball action.

Both Rushville’s Rookie and Major all-star teams advance to the title game and finished second overall.

Frank Denzler, one of the 12U coaches, was very pleased with how the weekend went.

“It was very nice to see the other teams buy into the premise of the tournament,” Denzler said.

One very cool moment came as the Rush County All-Stars prepared to face the Union County All-Stars. Union County had played against Grant in the past and prior to the game, the two teams met at second base (Grant’s position) to hold a moment of silence for Grant.

These type of special moments happened all around the fields and in all divisions.

As a result of the weekend’s tournament, Rush County baseball was able to award $1,000 toward the Grant Brower Memorial Scholarship Fund - a great end to a great weekend on the diamond.

“We had a good turnout and all the teams are excited about returning next year,” Denzler added.

Top 100 Showcase

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) and the IHSAA announced the events surrounding the 2013 Top 100 Showcase. The 11th annual event has been set for July 18 for the boys and July 23 for the girls, both at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.

These events are designed to give players from around the state exposure to college programs from around the nation. Last year, coaches from 64 colleges attended the workouts.

Rushville will be well represented in the events. RCHS head coach Brian Bowen will be one of the coaches for the boy’s event and RCHS head coach Melissa Marlow will be a coach for the girls.

In addition to the coaches, Rushville has three Lady Lions scheduled to attend the Showcase. Seniors Keragan Niehoff and Mackenzie Campbell along with junior Sarah Cook are set to participate in the day’s activities.

In addition to workouts and games, the Showcase will have guest speakers Brian Cardinal (former Purdue Boilermaker) for the boys and Christy Smith (assistant coach at Purdue) for the girls.
