---- — After putting up just 16 points in the first half, the Lady Lions outscored visiting Pendleton Heights 33-19 in the second half en route to the 49-41 victory Saturday in Memorial Gym.
Rushville improves to 12-3 on the season while the Lady Arabians fall to 11-5.
The Lady Arabians opened the game with a 6-0 run. It took half the first quarter for the Lady Lions to get into the scoring column as a tip by Mackenzie Campbell made it 6-2. A bucket by Pendleton freshman Sam Hammel on the break extended the lead back to six points before a 3-pointer by Keragan Niehoff closed the gap to 8-5. Hammel scored again for the Lady Arabians and two free throws by Campbell cut the Pendleton lead to 10-7 after one quarter of play.
Pendleton scored the first four points of the second quarter as it again took the Lady Lions nearly half the quarter to get things going offensively. A Kelsi Ash rebound bucket cut the deficit to 14-9 and Kaitlyn Howe’s 3-pointer made it 14-12. The Lady Arabians extended the lead to eight points (six Hammel points) before McKenzie Woolston’s bucket closed the half with Rushville trailing 22-16.
Kelsi Ash hit from behind the arc to open the second half and after a free throw by Pendleton’s Taylor Siefken, a bucket by Kelsi Ash and 3-pointer from Niehoff had the Lady Lions on top 24-23 with 4:58 to play in the third.
The teams traded the lead three times before a 3-pointer by Pendleton’s Adrianne Phillips gave the Lady Arabians a 30-26 lead. Rushville closed the quarter on an 8-3 run. Howe’s two free throws were followed by four straight points from Campbell as the Lady Lions led 34-33 heading to the fourth quarter.
Brooke Ash hit from behind the arc to start the fourth quarter. Kelsi Ash scored in the paint to make it 39-33. After a rebound bucket by Pendleton’s Siefken, another Brooke Ash 3-pointer had the lead at seven points. The Lady Lions pushed the lead to nine with one minute to play as Campbell hit two from the charity stripe. A 3-pointer by Kelsey Burton cut the Rushville lead to six, but that was as close as the Lady Arabians could get in the 49-41 Rushville victory.
Campbell led all scorers with 15 points. Niehoff finished with eight. Pendleton was led by freshman Hammel with 13 points.
After a slow second quarter for the Lady Lion reserves, Rushville outscored the Lady Arabians 10-2 in the third quarter and held off Pendleton in the junior varsity contest 34-31.
Rushville was led by Ellie Sammons with eight points. Brooke Niehoff added seven.
The Lady Lions return to action Thursday at Batesville (9-6).
