Coleman leads Marauders past Lions

FORTVILLE – A big third quarter by the Marauders and 36 points total by C.J. Coleman, Division I recruit, guided Mt. Vernon past Rushville 69-61 Friday.

Mt. Vernon improves to 6-6 on the season and the Lions drop to 5-6.

Mt. Vernon outscored the Lions 24-10 in the third quarter to rally from a three-point half time deficit. The Marauders were also solid at the free throw line, hitting 23-of-28, and they limited their turnovers to six for the game.

A Cameron Cox rebound bucket got the scoring started, but Mt. Vernon standout Coleman scored the next eight points to give the Marauders the 8-2 lead. A Bryce Dye 3-pointer stopped the Marauder run. Four straight free throws by Dan Werner pushed the lead 12-5 before the Lions put together a 7-0 run. Ricky Thompson’s 3 pointer started the run and back-to-back buckets by Alex Yurack and Kris Combs capped it. After another score from Coleman for the Marauders, Yurack’s 3-pointer gave the Lions a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Thompson opened the second quarter with another 3-pointer as the Lions led 18-14. Dye hit two more 3-pointers for the Lions in the quarter, the second pushing the Rushville lead to 24-19. Yurack followed with another bomb from long range as the Lions led 27-19.

Mt. Vernon scored the final five points of the half, including a 3-pointer by Werner, to cut the Lion lead to 27-24 at the half.

Mt. Vernon got the first four points of the second half to regain the lead and making it a 9-0 run carrying over from the second quarter. Yurack’s drive put Rushville back up 29-28. Coleman, who had 12 points in the frame, hit two free throws before Yurack hit back-to-back 3pointers as the Lions led 35-30.

Michael Thompson’s traditional three-point play sparked a 17-0 run by the Marauders. Miles Wayer’s unconventional 4-point play capped the run and gave the Marauders a 47-35 lead. Two Mitch Laird free throws closed the third quarter with Rushville trailing 47-37.
