SHELBYVILLE — A 16-4 third quarter helped the Lady Lions take control of the game at Shelbyville Tuesday. The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Golden Bears 30-13 in the middle quarters en route to the 53-35 victory.
The Lady Lions improve to 11-3 while Shelbyville drops to 5-10.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw the Lady Lions leading 14-12 after the first eight minutes. Rushville took an early lead on a Kelsi Ash rebound. After a rebound bucket by Keragan Niehoff, Shelbyville’s Allyson Conner hit a 3-pointer to give the host squad the 7-6 lead. A Cassady Skipton bucket had the lead up to 9-6, but a traditional three-point play by Mackenzie Campbell knotted the game.
Shelbyville’s Taylor Pierce hit a 3-pointer to give the lead back to the Lady Golden Bears, but two Campbell free throws and a rebound bucket by Niehoff at the buzzer had Rushville on top for good.
Four straight free throws by Campbell opened the second quarter. Kaitlyn Howe and Niehoff both added a bucket and the Rushville run was 12-0 as Shelbyville called a timeout trailing 22-12.
Cora Reinhart scored four straight points to stop the Rushville onslaught. The quarter closed on a Campbell bucket as Rushville led 28-21.
The third quarter was all Rushville. The Lady Lions scored the first 14 points. Ash scored four straight to start the run and Niehoff scored four straight to end it. Conner scored at the 1:38 mark of the quarter to end the scoring drought by Shelbyville. After a Brooke Ash rebound bucket, Skipton scored to make the margin 44-25 heading to the fourth quarter.
Shelbyville cut the deficit to 16 points on a traditional three-point play by Pierce, but the bank was open late in Shelbyville as Niehoff went glass on the 3-pointer to push the lead to 49-30.
Campbell and Niehoff closed out the scoring for the Lady Lions in the 53-35 win.
Campbell finished with 21 points and Niehoff had 19 for the Lady Lions. Rushville’s defense did a nice job on Shelbyville’s leading scorer Riley Achenbach, limiting her to two points.
In the opener, Rushville took control early and never looked back en route to the easy 57-20 victory. The Lady Lions led 12-3 after one quarter, 21-10 at the half and blew the game open in the third to lead 46-13 heading to the fourth quarter.
Ellie Sammons led the Lady Lions with 19 points. Brooke Ash finished with eight points and four assists. Brandi Adkins had four points. Tayler Koors added six points and six rebounds. Brooke Niehoff scored five points. Kayla Fogg finished with eight points, five rebounds and four steals. Brooklyn Herbert added five points and six boards and Madison Owen had two points and five rebounds.
