In the final tune-up before the softball sectional, the Lady Lions got a walk-off home run by Shelby Woods to edge Hagerstown 1-0. The Lady Lions complete the regular season at 9-10.
A scoreless game found Woods leading off the bottom of the seventh inning. Woods fouled off the first pitch she saw and then drove a long home run over the left field fence to give the Lady Lions the victory.
Hagerstown threatened early in the game as an error and two walks loaded the bases in the top of the first with no outs. Rushville starter Nicole Hoeing then got back-to-back strikeouts and a ground ball to get out of the jam. Hoeing on to retire the next six Lady Tigers in order.
Rushville had one hit in each of the first three innings. Brooke Niehoff had a one-out hit in the first. Woods had a lead-off single in the second and Catie Liggett doubled to right in the third.
Hagerstown’s Caudill and Farr had back-to-back singles to lead off the fourth. Hoeing closed the door on the Tigers by getting the next three batters to end the inning. The Lady Tigers had a lead-off single by Willis in the fifth, but she was caught stealing by the throw from Riley Lanham to Liggett covering second. Hoeing retired the next seven hitters to get the Lady Lions into the bottom of the seventh.
Offensively, Woods and Niehoff both had two hits. Liggett also added a double.
Hoeing allowed no runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two.
The Lady Lions open sectional play at Greensburg against Madison in the second game Tuesday.
