---- — A young Greenfield-Central Lady Cougar basketball team (no seniors) grew up a little on Saturday, coming into Memorial Gym and pressuring the Class 3A No. 1 Rushville into its first loss of the season, 48-41.
The Lady Lions fall to 4-1 and the Lady Cougars improve to 3-3.
“We got out-played in all facets of the game today. Our biggest problem was a lack of aggressiveness on both ends. We got out-worked, but it’s a loss that we can learn from,” head coach Melissa Marlow said.
Greenfield standout freshman Madison Wise opened the scoring in the game after both offenses struggled to get to the basket in the first two minutes. Keragan Niehoff answered on the other end to tie the game. After Greenfield took an 8-3 lead on a Wise score on the break, Niehoff and Casey Yager each had a bucket to get the Lady Lions within one at 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Lions took their first and only lead as Niehoff scored in the lane to open the second quarter. An answer by Greenfield’s junior Regan Lewis ignited the Lady Cougars, starting a 22-7 run in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by sophomore Paige Conley had the Lady Cougar lead at 21-9 before a Brooke Ash bucket stopped the bleeding.
The Lady Cougars closed the quarter on a 9-4 run and led 30-16 at the half.
The Lady Lions made their run in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Cougars 14-2 in the frame. A bucket by Kelsi Ash and free throws by Mackenzie Campbell opened the quarter. Greenfield’s lone score came from sophomore Savannah Girolami. The Lady Lions closed the quarter on a 10-0 run, highlighted by the banked-in 3-pointer at the buzzer by Lilly Cramer. After three quarter, the Lady Lions trailed 32-30.
Greenfield’s Girolami hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter. Rushville was able to cut the deficit to 35-32 on a bucket by Niehoff. Over the next five minutes of action, the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Lions 9-3 behind scoring from Shelby Oldham, Wise, Lewis and Girolami to lead 44-35. The Lady Lions could only close to within seven the rest of the way as the Lady Cougars celebrated the victory.
Niehoff led all scorers with 17 points. Oldham with 12, Girolami with 11 and Wise with 10 paced Greenfield.
In the opening game, Rushville outscored Greenfield 19-12 in the second half to pull away to the 37-27 victory. Rushville was led by Alisha Markley with 12 points and Kayla Fogg with 10. Greenfield got 12 points from Brandie Gruell.
