A 17-10 third quarter helped the Lions close out the regular season with a 65-59 victory at North Decatur Friday. The Lions end the regular season at 9-11 and the Chargers fall to 4-16.
Rushville’s Nate Hoeing (22 points) got the Lions on the board early. North came back with a 3-pointer from Kevin Geis and bucket by John Hammersmith. North held the lead the remainder of the quarter until a free throw by Hoeing knotted the game at 9-9. After a triple from Hammersmith, Cameron Cox’s traditional three-point play closed the quarter with the game tied at 12-12.
The lead changed hands six times in the second quarter. Rushville took its first lead since the first bucket as Laird scored and Cox followed with a free throw. Hoeing had seven points in the frame for the Lions and North countered with 10 from Jason Kirchhoff. Nate Niehoff’s assist to Cox had the Lions up 26-25, but a bucket by Geis closed the half with the Chargers leading 27-26.
Rushville regained the lead in the third as Niehoff scored in close and Hunter Orme went baseline for a two-handed dunk. North regained the lead late in the quarter on two Kirchhoff free throws. Rushville then closed the quarter on a 7-0 run. Two Niehoff free throws were followed by a 3-pointer from Hoeing and bucket by Niehoff to put the Lions on top 43-37 heading to the fourth quarter.
Rushville made that 6-point lead hold up, although North made a couple runs. The Chargers closed to within one on a pair of Kirchhoff free throws with 6:41 to play. With 5:20 to go, North got within two on two more Kirchhoff free throws. Niehoff’s free throws pushed the lead to four and the Chargers never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Following Hoeing’s 22 for the Lions was Niehoff 12 (six boards), Orme eight, Cox eight, Alex Yurack six, Laird four, Bryce Dye three and John Riddell two. North was led by Kirchhoff with 23 and Hammersmith with 19.
In the junior varsity game, the Lions held off a late charging North squad 39-38. North outscored the Lions 21-10 in the fourth quarter. The junior varsity Lions end the year at 13-7 with 10 wins in the final 12 games.
Rushville was led by Brad Busald with 11 points followed by Ricky Thompson 10, Kris Combs nine, Dye five and Nathan Borders four. The Chargers got 15 from Evan Wallpe.
The Lions take on Lawrenceburg (9-11) at 7 p.m. tonight in the first game of the Greensburg Sectional.
