RUSHVILLE — In the cold, windy conditions Friday, the Lions and Marauders split a doubleheader at the Council of Clubs Field.

Mt. Vernon took the early lead as Ohio State recruit Troy Montgomery led off with a home run to right field. Rushville starting pitcher Mark Busald came back to get the next three Marauders on strikes.

Austin Maggard led off the home-half of the first with a double, but an interference call wiped away any threat despite a later single by James Brashaber.

Mt. Vernon added two runs in the second behind a single and two doubles.

Rushville got a double by John Riddell and walk to Hunter Orme to get things going in the bottom of the inning. A ground ball by Mark Busald moved the runners up, but the Lions could not push across any runs.

Neither team threatened the rest of the way as the Marauders took the opener. Rushville had five hits – Maggard, Kyle Hoeing, Brashaber, Riddell and Orme. Mark Busald allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out nine.

The Lions took the early lead in the second game. Maggard, Hoeing and Brashaber had consecutive singles as Maggard scored the first run of the game. Hoeing scored on a Mt. Vernon error. After a walk to Austin Niehoff, Riddell singled in Brashaber for a 3-0 Rushville lead.

In the top of the second, the Lions added another run to the lead. Brad Busald walked and eventually scored on the Niehoff ground ball.

Maggard drove in two runs with a single in the third as the Lions stretched the lead to 6-0.

Mt. Vernon got in the scoring column in the bottom of the third on a pair of singles. Rushville came right back with two runs with two outs in the top of the fourth. Riddell singled and Orme homered to center.

After four innings, the Lions led 8-1.

The Marauders cut the deficit to 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Rushville then loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but could not score. Mt. Vernon was able to plate four runs in the bottom of the seventh to knot the game at 8-8 and send it to extra innings.

In the eighth, Brashaber singled. Niehoff and Riddell both drew walks and Orme’s ground out gave the lead back to the Lions.

Orme then closed out the win on the mound with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth.

Maggard led the Lions’ offense with three hits. Brashaber, Riddell and Brian Busald all had two hits.

Brad Busald pitched five innings allowing just two hits and seven walks while striking out nine.

The junior varsity Lions hosted Mt. Vernon Saturday.

The Marauders broke a 1-1 tie heading to the fifth with two runs in each of the final three innings to post the 7-1 victory.

Mitchell Waggoner started on the hill for the Lions with Keith Tressler pitching in relief. Jim Jones had the lone RBI for the Lions. Chase Hamilton, Michael St. John, Caleb Wiles and Waggoner all had one hit in the game.

Mt. Vernon scored three runs in the first inning of the second game.

Rushville’s Michael Tague then settled in on the hill and allowed only two more runs through his 4 2/3 innings. Garrett Young allowed just one hit in his inning of work on the mound for the Lions. Kris Combs scored the lone run for the Lions and Tressler added a hit.
