Thoughts from the sports desk

In a big early season college football matchup, TCU battles LSU on the gridiron. I had to laugh as I read some of the information coming out before the game.

LSU running back Jeremy Hill had been suspended by the team after punching a man outside a bar in April. He had prior misdemeanor in 2012, so this was not his first run-in with the law or in trouble with LSU’s football program.

LSU coach Les Miles reinstated Hill after allowing the team to vote if he should be able to return. Really? His team, who wants to make a run at the SEC and National titles, voted to reinstate their running back who averages 5.3 yards per carry. I’m stunned. Not really.

Of course the team is going to want the running back to play. They want to win. TCU coach Gary Patterson wondered if the Tigers were playing someone they beat by 100 points last year, would the players get a vote. I doubt it also.

The Manning rap

Not sure how many of you football fans have seen the new Manning rap video (Football On Your Phone) for DirecTV. If not, it’s worth a YouTube search. I’m not sure any of the current rap artists have anything to worry about after the Manning brothers hand up the cleats. Brutal. But it is dumb enough to be funny and the “football on your phone” will get stuck in your head if you’re not careful.

I think both should stick to tossing the pigskin.

Only preseason, but I realize it is only preseason, but I am excited for the NFL to get going. My Bucs have been busy in the offseason and I’m looking forward to how the new players add to the team. The addition of Darrelle Revis along makes the Bucs’ defense better. The Bucs were last against the pass last year, but first against the run.

I am also excited about the running back with Doug Martin (1,454 yards) and company and play-makers like Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams.

I just hope the “boys up front” can stay healthy in the trenches.
