Spiker hold off Panthers in five

RUSHVILLE — In five close sets, the Lady Lions held off visiting Knightstown 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10 in volleyball action. The Lady Lions are now 6-16 on the year.

With the Lady Panthers leading game one 22-21, Knightstown scored the final three points to close out the set. An Emily Thomas kill and Baylie Hockstedler ace sealed the win.

In the second set, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back. Rushville extended the lead to seven points on an Autumn Meece ace before closing out the 25-20 victory.

In the third set, the  Lady Lions broke a 22-22 tie on a Jacquelyn Hastings tip and Keragan Niehoff’s kill finished the 25-23 victory.

Knightstown came back to tie the match by winning the fourth set. Rushville led 23-22, but three straight aces by Kori Biehl and a Thomas kill pulled the Lady Panthers even at two sets each.

After falling behind 6-3 in the final set, the Lady Lions scored seven straight points. Allison Wainwright’s kill started the run and a Knightstown miss-hit ended it as Rushville led 10-6. Knightstown closed to 11-9, but two strong serves by Niehoff and a final miss by the Lady Panthers gave the Lady Lions the match.

For the Lady Lions, Wainwright had two aces, 10 kills, one block and 12 digs. Meece added three aces, one assist and 13 digs. Casey Yager tallied six kills, one block and one dig. Hastings ended with two aces, four kills, one block and 12 digs. Kayla Shelton had one kill and three digs. Keely Springman added three aces, two kills, 21 assists and eight digs. Niehoff had three aces, eight kills, two blocks, one assist and 17 digs. McKenzie Woolston finished with five digs. Michaela Colestock had three aces and six digs. Morgan VanNatta added one dig.

In the reserve game, the Lady Lions won in three sets 23-25, 25-19, 15-8.

For the Lady Lions, Brenna Hall had two digs and Brooke Drake and one dig. Carissa Hall finished with four aces, five assists and one dig. Darbi Mello added an ace and two digs. Emma Harpring had one kill and one dig. Jayce Ullah-Blocks finished with one ace, two kills and one dig. Woolston had three aces and one digs. Sam Dye added two aces, four kills and three digs. Tessa Hoeing had four aces, four kills and two digs. Tori Colestock had two digs.

At the Shelbyville Invitational, Rushville defeated Oldenburg Academy 16-25, 25-17, 15-14; defeated Pendleton Heights in three 23-25, 25-18, 15-11; and fell to Shelbyville 25-10, 25-8.

For the Lady Lions, Hall had 11 digs. Drake had six kills, one assist and two digs. Comstock had one ace, eight assists and 13 digs. Mello added one ace and 24 digs. Harpring had two kills, one block, two assists and six digs. Ullah-Blocks had one ace, eight kills, four blocks and four digs. Woolston finished with three aces, one kill, six assists and nine digs. Dye had three aces, two kills, one block and 21 digs. Hoeing had seven aces, six kills and 14 digs. Colestock had three kills, two blocks, two assist and four digs.
