RUSHVILLE — CONNERSVILLE – After a season of ups and down and battling through injury and illness, the Lady Lion tennis team put it all together Saturday and captured the sectional title at Connersville.

The Lady Lions opened the day with a 4-1 victory over the host Lady Spartans to improve to 5-12 on the year and earn a trip to the championship match.

Allison Wainwright won a 3-setter over Sally Wilhoite 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Rosella Troyer won a 3-setter 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 over Hailey Crum. Sarah Harpring needed just two sets to knock off Hannah Shelton 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Casey Yager and Jill Yager won 7-6 (5), 6-3 over Jenna Nobbe and Ashlee Wiley. At No. 2 doubles, Nici Martin and Lucy Dyer fell 6-3, 6-3 to Caitlin Bogg and Brittany Gabbard.

“A well-played match by both squads. I think we got a real determined effort from every one of our kids and it paid off. Our No. 1 and 2 singles matches were grueling wins for Allison and Rosella. We’ll try to get them some rest and some fluids and hopefully come back strong in this afternoon’s final,” Coach Heuer said between matches.

The Lady Lions advanced to face Franklin County. During the regular season, the Lady Lions fell to the Lady Wildcats 3-2, but Rushville turned the tables on Saturday and won the sectional title 3-2.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our kids and their commitment to winning this thing today. They have suffered through a tough schedule against very good competition this year in an effort to prepare for making a run at winning our sectional. It was one of our goals for this season and something that we’ve talked about all year,” Coach Heuer said. “Our doubles teams of Casey Yager and Jill Yager at No. 1 and Nici Martin and Lucy Dyer at No. 2 really stepped up in this final and helped nail down the win. Rosella Troyer performed well at No. 2 singles, winning in straight sets after enduring a draining 3-set match this morning.”

Troyer won the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Jodi Barnes. At No. 1 doubles, Jill Yager and Casey Yager defeated Emma Stern and Alicia Heis 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Martin and Dyer won 7-6 (4), 6-2 over Mallory Stewart and Taylor Murrell.

Wainwright lost to Samantha Gilbert 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Harpring fell 6-2, 6-4 to Tali Hunt at No. 3 singles.

The Lady Lions (6-12) advance to the Richmond Regional today to face the Lady Red Devils (9-5).
