Lady Dragons shut out Lady Lions

RUSHVILLE — Visiting New Palestine posted a 5-0 victory in girls varsity tennis action.

The Lady Lions are now 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the HHC.

“We were not at our best tonight. A couple of our kids were a little under the weather and it really showed in their performance. New Palestine is a tough opponent in a tough conference and it’s hard to be competitive even when we’re all playing well,” Coach Heuer noted.

At No. 1 singles, Allison Wainwright fell to Jen Roberts 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Rosella Troyer lost 6-2, 6-1 to Nicole Beaty. Sarah Harpring fell 6-1, 6-2 to Kristi LeBeau at No. 3 singles.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Jill Yager and Casey Yager lost 6-2, 6-1 to Danielle Spearing and Kara Miller. At No. 2 doubles, Nici Martin and Lucy Dyer lost 6-0, 6-3 to Abby Poole and Kylar Litteral.

For the junior varsity, Haley Riddell lost 6-0. Katie Schroeder won 7-6 (4). Bridgette Welter lost 6-0. Abbey Whitaker won 6-4. Sarah Hershberger won 6-0 and 6-4. Hershberger and Breanna Ison lost 6-1. Sarah Schombert and Whitaker lost 6-0. Larrisa Dunn and Riko Itakura lost 6-2. Natali Miller and Courtney Hall fell 6-2. Kelly Lee and Samantha Fowler lost 6-1.

Schombert and Miller fell 6-3. Dunn and Itakura won 6-1. Lee and Fowler lost 6-0.

Cougars tops Lady Lions 4-1

On the road at conference foe Greenfield-Central, the Lady Lions fell 4-1 in varsity action to drop to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the HHC.

The Lady Lions picked up a point at No. 1 singles as Allison Wainwright defeated Amelia Shepherd 6-4, 7-5. At No. 2 singles, Rosella Troyer lost 6-2, 6-0 to Roos VanManen. At No. 3 singles, Sarah Harpring lost 6-0, 6-0 to Alli Frazier.

The No. 1 doubles team of Jill Yager and Casey Yager lost 6-0, 6-2 to Megan Morley and Calyn Pope. At No. 2 doubles, Nici Martin and Lucy Dyer lost a 3-setter 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 to Sara Jones and Rachel Berish.

“Allison Wainwright got back on track at No. 1 singles and played well to get our lone varsity win. Nici Martin and Lucy Dyer were competitive at No. 2 doubles pushing their match to three sets. We’ve played eight matches in 10 days and I think a little fatigue is affecting our performance at a few positions. We’re back on the road tomorrow before a short break and we’ll just have to grit our teeth and suck it up,” Coach Heuer noted.

For the junior varsity, Haley Riddell won 8-2. Katie Schroeder won 8-2. Bridgette Welter lost 8-2 and won 8-4. Abbey Whitaker won 8-6. Sarah Schombert lost 8-5. Larissa Dunn won 8-3. Kelly Lee lost 8-3.

In doubles, Sarah Hershberger and Breanna Ison lost a tight match 8-7 (5). Dunn and Natali Miller lost 8-6. Riko Itakura and Courtney Hall lost 8-1. Lee and Samantha Fowler  were defeated 8-4. Miller and Ison fell 8-6. Hall and Itakura lost 8-2.
