Fifth inning keys Lions' win over Panthers

RUSHVILLE — Rushville sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and plated four runs to get past visiting Knightstown 7-4.

The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Lions came right back to grab the lead in the home-half of the inning.

Austin Maggard and Kyle Hoeing opened the inning with singles. With two outs, John Riddell walked to load the bases and Hunter Orme delivered a single to left to score Maggard and Hoeing.

Knightstown scored one run in the third and one in the fourth off starter Mike Busald and the Panthers led 3-2. Busald pitched four innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven.

James Brashaber pitched in relief for the Lions and shut down the Panthers in the top of the fifth. Rushville’s big inning started with a Maggard double. Hoeing singled in Maggard. Austin Niehoff and Riddell followed with infield singles to load the bases. Mark Busald drove in two with a single and Brian Busald singled in another run as the Lions led 6-3.

Rushville added an insurance run in the sixth on Maggard and Hoeing singles and a wild pitch.

The Panthers got a run in the seventh, before Brashaber closed out the 7-4 victory for the Lions. Brashaber tossed three innings, allowing no earned runs while scattering three hits and striking out two.
