RICHMOND – Host Richmond scored the first two goals of the game and then held off Rushville to secure the 2-1 victory in soccer action Tuesday.
Richmond jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:50 into the game as Kevin Mendoza scored. Mendoza added his second goal with 6:47 to play in the first half to give the Red Devils a 2-0 lead at the half.
With 34:14 left in the game, Rushville senior Hunter Yazel scored off the Derrik Justice assist to cut the deficit to 2-1. Both defenses held the opponents scoreless the rest of the way.
In the game, Richmond keeper Matt Abrams and Rushville keeper Frank Sammons both had 15 saves.
In the junior varsity contest, Richmond posted a 3-0 victory.
“I thought the boys played well even though the score wasn’t what we
wanted. It was the first time playing on artificial surface for most of the boys and it took some time to get use to the speed of the ball,” Coach John Foster said. “I thought Gunner Yurack had a very nice game at midfield and Ryan Norvell played a good game also. Adam Brumfield, in goal, kept us close most of the game.”
