Lions down Knights 1-0

Rushville senior Derrik Justice took a pass from Grant Houston and found the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead over South Dearborn at the 13:37 mark of the first half. The Lion defense made that goal hold up as the Lions defeated the Knights 1-0 in EIAC soccer action Saturday.

The Lions improve to 1-1 on the season.

“They out-shot us 13-4 in the contest, but the defense really did a great job of keeping them out of the net,” Coach Bob Beeler said. “We played well when we had to.”

The Lions had shots by Justice, Treyton Meal, Ricky Thompson and Hunter Yazel.

In the reserve contest, the Lions fell to the Knights 2-0.

“We played a sloppy first half of soccer, with too many basic mistakes but the boy’s turned it around in the second half and finished strong. We out-shot them but just couldn’t find the back of the net. I thought John Jacobs and Trey Newton-Gossett both played a good game on offensive side of the ball. They both had good movement and some good chances. Ethan Duncan and Tyler Stiers played a very good game on defense, especially the second half, holding them scoreless,” Coach Foster noted.

Bulldogs hand Lions season opening loss

The Lion soccer team hosted EIAC foe Batesville in the season opener. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead to half and went on to the 3-1 victory.

Batesville’s Austin Meyer scored at the 24:03 mark of the first half to give the Bulldogs the lead.

Eight minutes into the second half, Rushville tied the score as senior Hunter Yazel scored.

With 20 minutes to play, Batesville’s Louis Davalos scored to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead. Just three minutes later, John Krieger added a goal to make the final margin 3-1.

“I thought for our first match of the season, we played well,” head coach Bob Beeler said. “We still have some things to work on, but defensively Grant Houston, Trent McQueen, Zach Stiers and Curtis Wright did an excellent job. Frank Sammons was exceptional in goal and was complimented by their (Batesville) coach.”
