GREENSBURG - Defending sectional champion South Dearborn used a 4-run sixth inning to claim the softball sectional title 5-1 over Rushville at Greensburg.
The Lady Knights advance to the regional while the Lady Lions finish the season at 11-11.
The game was scoreless through three innings. The Lady Knights got on the board when a fly ball could not be handled by the Lady Lions and South Dearborn’s Barrett ended up at second base. With two-outs, Vertz’s triple scored the first run for the Lady Knights.
In the sixth, the Lady Knights added four runs, only one earned, to grab a 5-0 lead.
Rushville broke the scoreless drought in the seventh as Shelby Woods triple to right field. Woods scored as Nicole Hoeing reached first on a South Dearborn error. A strike out and double play ended the game and gave the Lady Knights the title.
Rushville threatened in the first inning as Catie Liggett singled and Riley Lanham singled with two outs. The Lady Lions could not push across a run.
On the night, the Lady Lions had just three hits and struck out 12 times against Vertz.
Taylor Hoeing went the distance for the Lady Lions in the circle in her final high school game. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six.
Lady Lions upend No. 8 Greensburg
GREENSBURG – A pitcher’s duel broke out in the softball sectional semifinal Wednesday at Greensburg. The Lady Lions and host Lady Pirates battled through a rough offensive night until the Lady Lions broke through with a run in the bottom of the seventh to knock off No. 8 Greensburg 1-0.
The Lady Lions advance to face South Dearborn for the sectional title.
Taylor Hoeing started in the circle for the Lady Lions and scattered three hits through seven innings with one walk and nine strike outs.
Greensburg’s Phillips allowed just four hits, but two big ones coming in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lady Pirates threatened in the top of the seventh as Phillips walked and Ward singled. Owens put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. A ground ball by Hershley was fielded by Rushville’s Kylie Martindale. She threw to the plate to Riley Lanham for the out. A pop out to Hoeing in the circle ended the top of the seventh.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a Greensburg error allowed Lanham to reach first. Gabby Doyle ran for Lanham and went to second on a Shelby Wood single to left. Nicole Hoeing then drove a single to left center field to plate Doyle with the winning run.
Nicole Hoeing had two hits for the Lions. Woods and Brooke Niehoff had the other singles for Rushville.
