AURORA – The chips were stacked against the Lady Lions softball team in the sectional final Friday at South Dearborn. The Class 3A No. 1 Lady Knights were the home team and playing on their home field in front of a large South Dearborn crowd.
The Lady Lions played right with the top-ranked Lady Knights, but a couple untimely errors allowed South Dearborn to claim the sectional title 3-1.
Nicole Hoeing went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions, allowing only one earned run and no walks while striking out two.
South Dearborn scored its first unearned run in the bottom of the first on five ground balls in the infield. The Lady Lions added a run in the second to lead 2-0.
Rushville got on the board in the fourth as Brooke Niehoff singled, went to second on the Hoeing sacrifice bunt, went to third on the Riley Lanham fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch.
Another unearned run in the fifth gave the Lady Knights an insurance run.
Rushville had hits by Lanham, Niehoff, Lilly Cramer and Kiley Cook in the ball game.
South Dearborn advances to host Charlestown in the regional today.
