Lady Lions advance to sectional final

---- — AURORA – The Lady Lions traveled to South Dearborn for sectional action Wednesday and will return there Friday to face the No. 1 ranked Lady Knights for the softball sectional title.

Rushville scored three runs in the first, three more in the third and two in the fourth inning en route to an 8-1 victory over Lawrenceburg in the sectional semifinal. In the other semifinal, No. 1 South Dearborn defeated Franklin County 9-0 to set up the match-up with Rushville for the sectional title for a second straight year.

In the bottom of the first inning, Rushville’s first four batters had hits. Catie Liggett started the inning with an infield single. Brooke Niehoff singled to center field and Nicole Hoeing drove in Liggett with a single to left. Riley Lanham followed with a single right field. Niehoff scored on a wild pitch. Kylie Martindale drove in courtesy runner Gabby Doyle as the Lady Lions led 3-0.

Lilly Cramer had a bunt single in the second inning.

In the bottom of the third, Hoeing walked to lead off the inning. Lanham followed with a single. Shelbie Brown drew a walk to load the bases. With one out, Tori Colestock was hit by a pitch to force in a run. After an infield fly out, Cramer delivered a big two-out single to left to score two more runs and give the Lady Lions a 6-0 lead.

Lawrenceburg scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth. The Lady Lions came right back with two in the bottom of the inning. Niehoff started with a double to center field and Hoeing doubled to score Niehoff.

With one out, Brown’s deep fly ball to center field scored courtesy runner Doyle as the Lady Lions led 8-1 after four innings. That was all the offense for the Lady Lions in the game.

Hoeing went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions, allowing no earned runs while scattering four hits and walking two. She had six strikeouts.
