Lions fall to Hagerstown; split with Lawrenceburg

Hagerstown’s Tyler Funkhouser had a big night at Rushville Tuesday as the Tiger blasted home runs in his first two at bats, reached base four times, scored four runs and drove in three runs in Hagerstown’s 7-1 win over the Lions.

Hagerstown catcher Bryan Mathews added a solo home run for the Tigers.

Brad Busald started on the hill for the Lions and suffered the loss. He struck out eight and walked one in five innings. Michael Tague had three strikeouts in his two innings of relief work.

Chase Hamilton had the lone RBI. He drove in Nick Sprinkle with a double. Sprinkle, Keith Tressler, Spenser Wilson, Michael St. John and Mitchell Wagoner all had singles for the Lions.

The junior varsity Lions defeated Shenandoah 5-4 in 10 innings.

Spencer Fry provided the fireworks as he delivered a walk-off home run to give the Lions the victory. Fry had four hits and three RBIs at the plate and also picked up the win on the hill for the Lions, pitching all 10 innings and allowing only one walk.

Noah Nigh, Satchel Kuhn, Clayton Griffith and Andrew Rice all had hits for the Lions.

In the doubleheader with Lawrenceburg, Wagoner got the win for the Lions on the hill in the opener. Wagoner pitched all seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs with nine strikeouts and no walks.

The Lions had a 5-run fifth inning. Spenser Wilson opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner Frank Sammons stole second. Sprinkle reached on an error. Tressler put down a bunt and the Tigers could not handle the ball cleanly. Wagoner brought in the first run with a fielder’s choice. Hamilton knocked in two with a double. One batter later, Busald plated two more runs for the Lions.
