Lions earn split with East Central

Rushville played host to conference foe East Central Friday in a doubleheader. The Trojans broke open a 4-2 game with seven runs in the fifth inning en route to the 11-3 victory in the opener.

Mitchell Wagoner started for the Lions with Michael Tague pitching in relief.

Offensively, the Lions were led by Brad Busald with a single, double and one RBI. Caleb Wiles, Keith Tressler (triple), Wagoner (double) and Spenser Wilson (two RBIs) all had hits for the Lions.

In the night-cap, the Lions earned the split with a 5-2 victory.

The Lions took the 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Chase Hamilton was hit by a pitch and went to third on Busald’s single. Hamilton scored on Michael St. John’s single and Busald scored on a throwing error by East Central.

Wiles held the Trojans to one run through the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, East Central got a double, drew a walk and reached on an error to score one run and put runners on the corners. Busald pitched in relief and struck out the next Trojan batter to end the threat.

In the top of the fifth, Rushville scored three runs, two on the single by Wilson with the bases loaded.

Busald struck out nine of the first 10 hitters he faced as he closed the door on the victory.

The junior varsity Lions dropped two against East Central Saturday. Big innings led to the win for the Trojans in both games.

Offensively, the Lions were led by Noah Nigh and Will Hogsett’s four hits on the day. Elijah Miller added two hits. Clayton Griffith, Noah Brinson, Trey Newton-Gossett, Austin Schindler and Spencer Fry all had hits on the day.
