Lady Lions win sectional title

RUSHVILLE — The atmosphere was electric in Memorial Gym Saturday as Madison and

Rushville took the floor in the Sectional 29 title game. When the

sectional draw came out, this is the game most fans pointed to and the

players did not disappoint. Rushville used the home court advantage to

build a double digit lead in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Cubs clawed

back to get within three late in the game. Rushville made enough plays to

hold off the late rally and claim the sectional title 63-56.

The Lady Lions (20-3) advance to face Jasper (15-9) in the regional

Saturday at Brownstown Central in the second game at 12:30 p.m. Madison

ends its season at 18-5.

Madison opened the scoring in the game with a 3-pointer by Cadie Povaleri.

Rushville got a bucket by Kelsi Ash and free throw from Sarah Cook to tie

the game. Keragan Niehoff’s bucket and two free throws had the Lady Lions

on top 7-3 with 3:42 to play in the first quarter and the Lady Lions never

trailed again.

Rushville closed the quarter with buckets by Casey Yager and Cook to lead

15-8 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Madison cut the deficit to five at 18-13 on a

Whitney Wynn bucket. The Lady Lions extended the lead to as much as 12

points at 31-19 on a Mikayla Dougherty steal and bucket. A Makayla Herbert

free throw closed the first half with the Lady Lions leading 32-23.

In the third, the Lady Cubs cut the deficit to seven on a bucket by Hannah

Cain. Rushville ran off six straight points, capped by two Mackenzie

Campbell free throws, and the lead was 42-29.

The Lady Cubs got the deficit to single digits on a traditional three-

point play by Povaleri, but Campbell’s 3-pointer closed the quarter with

Rushville on top 48-36.

With the lead at 14 points (55-41) with 5:32 to play, Madison went on an

8-1 run to get to within seven. After a Campbell bucket the Lady Cubs

scored another six straight to cut the deficit to 58-55 with 1:42 to play

in the game. The Lady Lions then sealed the game at the charity stripe,

outscoring the Lady Cubs 5-1 down the stretch to clinch the sectional

title.

In the semifinals, the Lady Lions eliminated Lawrenceburg 62-29.

The Lady Lions led 15-7 after one quarter, 28-17 at the half and 52-23

after three quarters.

Niehoff led the way for the Lady Lions with 15 points. Cook and Campbell

both had 13. Yager finished with eight.

Prior to Rushville and Jasper taking the floor Saturday, Evansville Bosse

(18-6) and Corydon Central (19-5) will open the regional.

Tickets for the regional will be on sale in the RCHS Athletic Office

starting Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for player parents, cheer

parents and Golden Lion members. General public can buy tickets from 4 to

9 p.m. Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to noon

Friday.
