Lions improve to 2-0 on the diamond

RUSHVILLE — LIBERTY – The Lion pitching staff stymied the Patriots offense as Rushville knocked off Union County 8-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Mitchell Wagoner picked up the win on the hill for the Lions. He pitched two innings allowing no hits, no earned runs and striking out one. Five

Lion pitchers combined to allow one earned run on three hits and striking out nine.

John Riddell had a big night offensively with three hits and two runs scored.

Hunter Orme had a pair of hits, including a 2-run home run in the top of the fifth inning.

Cameron Cox had a single and double. James Brashaber and Austin Niehoff both had two hits on the day.

For the game, the Lions had eight runs on 14 hits and committed just one error. Union County had one run on three hits and committed three errors.

In the reserve contest, Union County held off the Lions 1-0.

Rushville’s Noah Nigh pitched two innings allowing one hit. He was also 1-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base. Michael St. John pitched two hit-less innings. Kris Combs went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Lions split with Shelbyville

The Lions and Golden Bears split an HHC doubleheader Friday as Shelbyville took the opener 7-0 and the Lions won the night cap 7-2.

Shelbyville’s Ethan Larrison went the distance on the hill, allowing three hits, no runs and two walks while striking out nine.

Rushville’s Mike Busald took the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings with two earned runs on eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

Offensively, John Riddell had two hits and Hunter Orme had the other Lion hit.

In the second game, Mark Busald picked up the win on the mound. He went the distance allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.

James Brashaber had a pair of hits, including a 2-run triple. Orme finished with two hits and Mark Busald helped his own cause with a double.

The Lions (3-1, 1-1 in HHC) travel to Batesville today and to New Castle Wednesday.

In the junior varsity doubleheader Saturday, the Golden Bears took both games.

In the opener, Rushville’s Chase Hamilton had a triple. Kris Combs pitched one scoreless inning.

In the second game, Will Hogsett had a single and Combs pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing just one run.

The junior varsity squad (0-3, 0-2 in HHC) will also be at Batesville Tuesday and New Castle Wednesday.
