Lady Lions third at track sectional

RUSHVILLE — CONNERSVILLE – The Lady Lion track team traveled to Connersville for the IHSAA track sectional. The host Lady Spartans won the team title with 127 points. Hagerstown was second with 98 followed by Rushville with 94.5.

Union County finished fourth with 85 followed by Richmond 62, Cambridge City Lincoln 56, Centerville 46, Seton Catholic 23, Tri 12.5 and Northeastern 11.

The Lady Lions had two individual champions on the day. Ellie Sammons won the discus with a school record toss 122-7 and Kylee Elleman won the pole vault. Sammons also advanced to the regional in the shot put.

A total of 12 Lady Lions will advance to the regional next week at Shelbyville.

Regan Laker advanced in both the 100 and 300 hurdles.

The 3200 relay team of Mikayla Dougherty, Monica Dougherty, Tiffany Nickel and Brooke Drake advanced to the regional.

Jacquelyn Hastings advanced in both the high jump and the long jump.

Samm Harrison will join Elleman in the pole vault event at the regional.

The 400 relay team of Autumn Meece, Katy Newbold, Marisa Hall and Hastings advanced to compete in the regional.

“As a coach, you look forward to moments when everything comes together for your team, and last night the girls really performed extremely well. We have talked all year about putting forth the effort it takes to be successful. Sophomore Ellie Sammons has been throwing incredibly well in practice lately, so we knew she had a really great throw in her.  I’m not sure any of us thought she would break the school record last night though, which makes it even more special for her. If she continues to throw really well and improve, she has a legitimate shot to become the first Lady Lion track athlete to compete at the state level in quite a long time,” Coach Jim Helsley said. “Overall, the team had a top four finish in nine events. Seniors Mikayla Dougherty and Autumn Meece truly anchored for their respected relays teams.  They were paired with a team of mainly underclassmen and helped guide them to regional. This was a night to really be proud of all of these girls.”
