Brown slams Lady Lions to win

RUSHVILLE — CONNERSVILLE – Freshman Shelbie Brown blasted a grand slam to help the Lady Lions rally past Connersville 9-8 Wednesday. The Lady Lions improve to 8-10 on the year.

Connersville held an 8-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Tori Colestock drew a walk to start the rally for the Lady Lions. With one out, Kylie Martindale walked and Jessica Wilson singled to load the bases.

Catie Liggett then doubled in two runs to cut the deficit to 8-5. Brooke Niehoff walked to load the bases and bring Brown to the plate. Brown drove the third pitch she saw over the left-center field fence to put the Lady Lions on top 9-8.

Rushville starter Nicole Hoeing closed the door on the Lady Spartans, retiring the next six hitters to secure the victory.

Liggett led the offense with two singles and a double in her four plate appearances. Niehoff, Riley Lanham and Wilson all singled to go with Brown’s home run.

On Monday, the Lady Lions fell to Shelbyville 7-4. Rushville scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally from a 4-2 deficit, but the Lady Golden Bears got a walk-off, two-out home run to steal the win.

Offensively, Liggett had a double and a triple. Brown doubled. Niehoff had a single and triple. Hoeing had a single.

In junior varsity action, Shelbyville knocked off the Lady Lions 20-12.

The Lady Lions had 12 runs on five hits. Gabby Doyle had a double and single. Morgan Edwards, Sierra Snow and Jasmine Cook had the other hits for Rushville.

The junior varsity squad fell to Mt. Vernon 12-1.

Rushville’s lone run came as Brown doubled, moved to third on a Sammaiya Fultz ground ball and scored on Colestock’s single.

For the game, Brown had two doubles, Colestock had three hits and Audrey Land had a single.
