RUSHVILLE — Coming off a tough overtime loss at Center Grove, the Dragons looked right at home Saturday against Rushville. The Dragons (3-1) jumped out to a 17-4 start in the first quarter and rode the lead to a 73- 47 victory over the Lions (1-2).

A bucket by Michael Morris on the break and two inside scores by Brandon Jonas had the Dragons on top early 6-0. John Riddell scored in the lane to get the Lions on the board. The Dragons then went on an 11-2 to end the quarter. Morris connected on nine of the 11 Dragon points with Nate Niehoff’s inside bucket the only score for the Lions in the stretch. After one quarter, the Dragons led 17-4.

Rushville settled down in the second quarter and opened with the first seven points. Cameron Cox scored in the paint and Alex Yurack followed with a 3-pointer. Nate Hoeing’s steal and bucket had the deficit down to 17-11. The Dragons responded with four straight points to push the lead back to double figures.

Rushville closed to 23-16 on another Niehoff bucket, but the Dragons got a driving bucket by Jonas and back-to-back 3-pointers by Morris to lead 31- 16. After a Rushville timeout, the Lions scored four straight, but the Dragons closed the quarter with a 3-pointer by Justin Ikerd and layup by Jonas to lead 36-21 at the break.

The Dragons extended the lead in the third quarter – outscoring the Lions 17-13. Niehoff’s six points and Cox’s 3-pointer led the way for the Lions in the frame.

Rushville could not make a run in the fourth as the Dragons added 20 points to their total. Hunter Orme’s traditional three-point play and

Hoeing’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 19. The Dragons went on a 9-2 run before a Ricky Thompson 3-pointer stopped the surge by New Palestine.

Niehoff led the way for the Lions with 16 points. Hoeing added 13. Morris led all scorers with 23 points. Jonas added 12 for the Dragons.

In the junior varsity game, a 13-3 run in the third quarter led the Dragons to a 38-28 victory over the Lions.
