Colts agree to terms with veteran safety

INDIANAPOLIS — Mike Adams will get a chance to erase bad memories from Super Bowl XLVIII as a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

The franchise announced Saturday morning it had agreed to terms with the veteran safety.

Adams started the NFL’s most recent championship game at free safety for the Denver Broncos and recorded six tackles in a 43-8 loss against the Seattle Seahawks.

The AFC champions declined to re-sign him following the season, and Adams told Sirius XM NFL Radio hosts Alex Marvez and Phil Savage he was beginning to feel anxiety as teams near the end of their spring workout schedules.

“Hopefully, I can land a spot,” Adams said on the radio. “All I need is another opportunity.”

The Colts have an opening at safety after longtime starter Antoine Bethea left for San Francisco as a free agent. Delano Howell and Sergio Brown have been considered the leading in-house candidates to fill the role.

Adams has made 73 regular-season starts over a 10-year career, including 23 starts the past two seasons with the Broncos. Indianapolis travels to Denver to open the 2014 season on Sept. 7.

The 33-year-old entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with San Francisco in 2004. He spent his first three seasons with the 49ers before playing the next five in Cleveland.

Adams started all 16 games and totaled 80 tackles with two fumble recoveries for the Broncos in 2012. Last year, he had seven starts with 64 tackles and one interception. Adams has 13 career interceptions with a high of four in 2005.

The Colts had an open spot on the 90-man roster after placing safety Corey Lynch on the season-ending injured reserve list Friday. He’s the second player Indianapolis has placed on the list, joining defensive end Fili Moala who was de-activated Wednesday.

The Colts begin a three-day mandatory mini-camp Tuesday at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center.
