Pirates blast 3 HRs in win over Lions

RUSHVILLE — The Lions played host to possible sectional foe Greensburg Wednesday at the Council of Clubs Field. The Pirates scored four runs in the top of the first and three in the top of the second en route to the 9-4 victory.

Two Rushville errors extended the top of the first and the Pirates took advantage with a 3-run home run to lead 4-0.

The Lions responded in the bottom of the first. Kyle Hoeing drew a one-out walk and went to third on James Brashaber’s double. Austin Niehoff came up with a two-out single to score both runners.

Another 3-run home run in the top of the third gave the Pirates a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Austin Maggard led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a sharp grounded out by Hoeing. Brashaber’s line drive single to center plated Maggard. After a wild pitch advanced Brashaber, he scored on an RBI single by Niehoff.

Greensburg’s third home run of the game came in the fourth to push the lead to 9-4.

The Lions had an opportunity in the sixth as singles by Hunter Orme, John Riddell and Mark Busald loaded the bases. The Pirates then turned a double play to end the threat.

The Pirates finished with nine runs on 11 hits and had one error. The Lions had four runs on nine hits and four errors. Brashaber and Niehoff (3 RBIs) led the offense with two hits. Orme, Riddell, Mark Busald, Brian Busald and Brad Busald had the other hits for the Lions.

Brad Busald was solid in relief, going three innings and allowing just two base runners.

In the junior varsity game, a 3-run home run broke a 5-5 tie to give the visiting Pirates the victory 8-5.

For the Lions, Michael Tague pitched two innings with one earned run. Keith Tressler pitched 2 1/3 of hitless relief.

Michael St. John led the offense with three hit and an RBI. Jim Jones had two hits and two RBIs. Kris Combs had a hit and stolen base.

The varsity Lions host Mt. Vernon for an HHC double header starting at 5:30 p.m. today.
