Third quarter 3s key Lions’ win

RUSHVILLE — A bombardment of 3-pointers in the third quarter helped the Lions rally from a 23-21 half-time deficit to a 61-52 victory over rival Connersville Friday.

The Lions hit five triples in the third quarter, including three by Mitch Laird. Laird opened the scoring in third with a bomb and after a bucket by Connersville’s Charles Peterson, Laird hit another from downtown. His free throw and rebound bucket by John Riddell had the Lions on top 30-25. A traditional three-point play by Connersville’s Dakodah Carlin cut the lead to two points, but Alex Yurack hit his first 3-pointer.

With the lead at 33-30, Laird’s third triple started an 8-2 run that was capped by another Yurack 3-pointer as the Lions led 41-32. A Dezmen Rentbucket for the Spartans closed the third with the Lions leading by seven points.

The Spartans closed the gap to four points on three occasions in the fourth quarter. Leading 44-40, the Lions went on a 9-1 run, the final three points coming on Laird’s fifth 3-pointer of the game. Rushville led by 12 points and never looked back, winning by the final of 61-52.

The Spartans took control of the game early, jumping out to an 8-1 lead.

Sean Davis had seven early points for the Spartans. Cameron Cox’s jumper got the Lions going and Laird followed with his first 3-pointer. Hunter Orme’s bucket closed the quarter with the Spartans holding a 10-8 lead.

The Spartans pushed the lead back to six points in the second quarter, but could not separate from the Lions. Trailing 18-12, the Lions got a 3-pointer from Nate Hoeing to cut the deficit in half. The Spartans again built the lead to six on a bucket by Davis, but the Lions got two free throws from Orme and bucket by Hoeing to close to within two at 23-21 at the half.

Laird led all scorers with 27 points. Carlin led the Spartans with 17.

In the junior varsity game, it was a reversal of roles. The Spartans outscored the Lions 23-6 in the third quarter en route to the 49-34 victory.

Ricky Thompson led the Lions with 13 points. Micah Kelley led the Spartans with 15.
