Lady Lions even record at 2-2 with win over Yorktown

RUSHVILLE — A dominating first-quarter performance by the Lady Lions led to a 54-38 victory over Yorktown Tuesday. The Lady Lions improve to 2-2 overall and

1-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Lady Tigers fall to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the HHC.

A slow start offensively by the Lady Tigers spelled doom for the visitors.

After Yorktown missed on its first several shots, the Lady Lions were off and running and never looked back.

Kelsi Ash got the scoring started with a short jumper. Ash connected on a 3-pointer later in the quarter to push the Rushville lead  to 13-0.

Yorktown got on the board with a pair of free throws by Katy Johnson. That was the only points of the quarter for the visitors. A Mackenzie Campbell bucket started a 9-0 run which was capped by three straight points from Keragan Niehoff to give the Lady Lions a 22-2 lead after the first quarter.

Campbell’s drive opened the second quarter. Yorktown then went on a 6-0, but a traditional three-point play by Sarah Cook ended the run. Katie Miller scored four straight for the Lady Tigers, but the Lady Lions got a big response from the bench as Makayla Herbert entered and hit two from behind the arc to give Rushville a 33-12 lead at the half.

The second half started like the first with an Ash bucket. Yorktown scored the next six points before a 3-pointer by Campbell made it 38-18.

Rushville ended the quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Mikayla Dougherty. At the end of three quarters, Rushville led 47-20.

Yorktown then went to the 3-ball to cut into the deficit. Miller hit three from behind the arc and Johnson hit one to cut the deficit to 50-32.

Another late 3-pointer from Miller cut the final margin to 16 points at 54-38.

Cooke and Campbell  led the Lady Lions with 12 points. Miller led all scorers with 20 points.

Rushville held Yorktown to 16 total points (five in the first half) in the junior varsity game en route to the 27-16 victory. Ellie Sammons led the Lady Lions with seven points. Herbert and Taylor Yager both had six points. Kylie Martindale added four points. Tayler Koors and McKenzie

Woolston both had two points.

The Lady Lions return to action Saturday, hosting Richmond with the JV game set for noon.
