No. 1 Lady Lions to play for 3A state title

Rushville knocks off Evansville Memorial for semistate crown

One game. It has come down to just that. One game. After knocking off No. 5 Evansville Memorial 60-49 in the Bedford North Lawrence Semistate, the No. 1 Lady Lions will play one final game — the Class 3A state championship game against Ft. Wayne Concordia Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Ft. Wayne.

“We are going to enjoy this for a bit,” Coach Melissa Marlow said. “But the kids really feel like they have unfinished business to take care of.”

That business begins at 6 p.m. Saturday against the Lady Cadets.

In the semistate, the Lady Lions got off to a slow start offensively. Shelbie Justice scored all six of the Lady Lion points. Memorial got four points from Natalie Cohlmeyer and three points from Mallory Ladd to build a 9-6 lead after the first quarter.

A traditional three-point play from Cohlmeyer had the Lady Tigers on top 12-6. The Lady Lions then turned it on offensively and scored the next nine points. Alexa Bess started the run and Justice capped it as Rushville led 15-12.

Memorial bounced back with four straight from Ladd and after a bucket by Bess in the lane, Ladd completed a traditional three-point play to push the lead to 19-17.

Rushville outscored the Lady Tigers 8-2 to end the first half. Meagan Hittle and Morgan Herbert both hit 3-pointers in the run as the Lady Lions led 25-21 at the break.

The Lady Tigers made a run of their own in the third quarter. A 3-pointer from Aly Ulrich was followed by one from Cohlmeyer and Memorial had knotted the game at 27-27.

After a Justice bucket, Ladd scored and Cohlmeyer hit again from long range as the Lady Tigers led 32-29 and Coach Marlow called for a time-out.

“We went to the 3-2 defense to try and keep the ball out of the paint and then Cohlmeyer and Ulrich hit a couple threes so we had to go to man,” Coach Marlow said. “The girls moved their feet and really put pressure on the ball.”
